Canonical's kernel engineer Juerg Haefliger has recently provided updates on Ubuntu's support for the Lenovo ThinkPad X13s (Gen 1) laptop. The ThinkPad X13s is an ARM laptop powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx (gen3) processor. It's packed with robust features including Adreno 690 GPU, 16 GB RAM, and a 256 GB SSD.

From Experimental to Progressing Support

Last year, Haefliger contributed to an experimental Ubuntu 23.10 install image for this device. However, the availability of an installer image for the recent Ubuntu 24.04 LTS version has been awaiting confirmation. The delay has been due to resource constraints, but the community is actively working on integrating support to the upcoming 'Noble' edition.

New Ubuntu support modifications for the Lenovo ThinkPad X13s include upstream kernel support replacing the previously used linux-laptop kernel and the introduction of a new configuration package, ubuntu-x13s-settings. Despite the progress, there are existing issues like non-functioning web cam, low speaker audio, lack of hibernation or low-power suspend, and pending support for TPM and fingerprint reader.

Current State and Future Prospects

The existing Lenovo ThinkPad X13s support does demonstrate the growing prevalence and viability of ARM laptops for daily use. Although there are presently certain challenges such as application compatibility and less streamlined hardware support compared to Intel/AMD platforms, the development community's active engagement indicates a promising future for ARM laptops running Ubuntu.
